Is an independent theater project in Berlin that artistically explores social and political processesand cycles. aufBruch considers the prison institution the quintessential example of thisphenomenon. By excluding prisoners from society, prison recreates society within itself, but to the exclusion of the public. This is the starting point of aufBruch’s artistic work. The goal is to make prison, which normally excludes the public, accessible to the public through the medium of art. The goal is to give inmates a language, a voice, and a face by teaching them the art of acting, thuscreating the possibility of a prejudice-free encounter between inside and outside. The goal is to create lively theater of high artistic quality, the result of the combination of personality and dramatic text, which impresses audiences with its authenticity and expressivepower. AufBruch sees herself and her work as an artistic bridge between the world inside and outsideprison walls. Her theater is conceived as a tool for reflection, capable of inducing audiences to reflect on social issues and as a basis for a respectful encounter between inmates and the rest of society, both members of a European society. For eighteen years now, aufBruch has worked continuously at Berlin’s Tegel prison, for ten years atthe Berlin juvenile detention center, for four years at Plötzensee prison, and for one year at the recently built Heidering prison, both closed-stay prisons for men. Outside Germany, aufBruch has staged productions in a Russian juvenile detention center and a Chilean prison. aufBruch’s work is characterized by a large and expressive ensemble of inmates on stage and an artistic team with external theater experience that guides the project, ensuring professionalconditions. Thanks to its numerous and diverse productions, aufBruch has become an establishedpresence in Berlin’s theater scene. From classical theater to ambitious open-air productions, aufBruch consistently manages to spark growing audience interest and leave a lasting impression.
